Promoting Diversity and Innovation in the Geosciences Across the Lone Star State

WELCOME TO DIG TEXAS!

DIG TEXAS (Diversity and Innovation for Geosciences in Texas) is a community of geoscientists and educators across Texas working toward enhanced diversity in geosciences in Texas, as well as improved geosciences literacy among Texas high school science teachers.

Our mission is to establish a sustainable network of high school and college educators to recruit students from the increasingly diverse Texas population into college-level geosciences.

June 17, 2011 State Board for Educator Certifcation Meeting

DIG Texas supports the systemic change required for the senior-year capstone course, “Earth and Space Science”  through a range of actions including teacher training and earth science teacher certification. Dean Kate Miller (College of Geosciences at Texas A&M University), Kathy Ellins (Jackson School of Geosciences) gave oral testimony in support of an earth science teacher certification to the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) in June, 2011. A number of K-12 teachers submitted written testimony.

Web Site

We have established the DIG TEXAS Web Site to facilitate communication among our members, post news, and provide information about activities and planned events.

Impact

There is a pressing need for geosciences education that addresses the needs of all students in Texas. DIG Texas advances a statewide commitment to increase geosciences literacy among high school science teachers in Texas – an improvement that will have lasting impact far beyond the life of this project. Second, it supports geosciences education for Texas secondary school students, a critically important factor in recruiting new students into college-level geosciences.
